A CLEARER LOOK AT YOUR SWIM

How to compare two swims beyond total time

Normalize distance with pace per 100 metres, check timing definitions and pool context, then compare laps without treating a faster average as proof of improvement.

Two sessions can have different distances, rests and strokes. Before comparing their totals, choose a common unit and check that the recordings describe similar conditions.

1. Start with pace per 100 metres

Divide the time in seconds by distance in metres, then multiply by 100. For example, 1,500 m in 30 minutes is 2:00 per 100 m; 1,000 m in 21 minutes is 2:06 per 100 m. The shorter total time in the second swim does not make its average pace faster. The free calculator below performs this conversion.

2. Check which time you entered

Moving time and elapsed session time answer different questions. If your total includes rest, the calculated average also includes that rest. Use the same time definition for both swims and label your notes. A simple calculator cannot identify pauses from a total duration or reconstruct missing active time.

3. Keep the swimming context

Compare the pool length, stroke mix, distance, recording source and purpose of each session. An easy session and a session containing harder intervals are not interchangeable. Inspect available lengths or splits to see whether an average hides uneven pacing. Do not infer missing lap details from the average alone.

4. Write one observation for next time

A useful note can be specific: the recorded pace stayed more consistent through the middle lengths, or the average includes a longer rest. It does not need to declare a personal best. Swimee Pro offers side-by-side workout comparison when the needed Health data is available; the website calculator remains free and works without importing records.
