How to Use an Unguided Meditation Timer

Meditation TimerZenMonkeyInterval Bells

An unguided meditation timer marks a period of practice without spoken instructions. In ZenMonkey, choose a duration and use bells to mark the beginning and end. You can also add interval bells if they fit your practice.

Start with the kind of practice you want

If you already have an approach you want to follow, a timer can give it a clear start and finish. If you want someone to explain a technique or lead each step, a guided course may be more useful. ZenMonkey does not include spoken meditation lessons.

The timer helps organize time. It does not decide which practice is right for you or assess the quality of a session.

Choose a duration

Open the timer and choose how much time you want to set aside. Check the displayed duration before starting. A short test can help you understand the controls before relying on them for a session.

You do not need to choose a longer duration simply because the timer allows it. Start with the time you intended to make available.

Decide what each bell should do

The start bell marks the beginning. The end bell marks the end of the selected period. An interval bell is an optional cue within that period.

Leave interval bells off if you want an uninterrupted session between the opening and closing bells. If your existing practice uses periodic cues, check the interval setting before you begin.

Try a short session with your intended device and audio setup to confirm that the cues behave as expected. The exact settings and audio behavior should be checked on the device and app version you use.

Begin, then follow your own approach

Once you have checked the duration and bells, start the timer and follow your chosen practice. There are no spoken instructions to follow during the session.

A session record shows time spent using the tool. It is not a score for how well you meditated. A longer duration or a different heart-rate reading is not proof of a better session.
